Who Was Babe Ruth? Celebrating a new release!

When I was in elementary school, I read every biography in the school library. I'm still a huge biography fan. I watch the Biography Channel. And I also write for Grosset & Dunlap's "Who Was" series. Also known as the "big head" biography chapter book series because of the books' strikingly illustrated covers. Barnes & Noble stores usually have a nice display of assorted Who Was titles in the children's section, face out.

Today I'm celebrating the release of Who Was Babe Ruth?, the 4th title I've written for the series.

Babe Ruth was a fascinating guy, even when he was a kid. He came from a poor Baltimore family and he was a handful almost from day one. It was at a reform school that he discovered his talent for baseball, and by the age of nineteen, he was on his way to becoming a sports legend. Babe was often out of shape and even more often out on the town, but he had a big heart and an even bigger swing! Kids will learn all about the Home Run King in this rags-to-riches sports biography. With black-and-white illustrations throughout.

Drop a comment here at Smack Dab or on my home blog for a chance to win an autographed copy! Winner will be announced on my blog on or about January 19th.

My titles in the "Who Was" series for ages 7-11:
Who Was Johnny Appleseed?
Who Was Marco Polo?
Who Was Jim Henson?
Who Was Babe Ruth?

  1. Congratulations, Joan! I am a big biography buff, too. Your books look wonderful (who doesn't love a big head?).

  2. Congrats, Joan! I got involved in baseball a few years ago (thanks Greinke's Cy-Young-winning year with the Royals). This sounds like a fantastic read.

  3. Trudi, thanks! The only biographies I've noticed that I avoid on the Bio Channel are the ones about serial killer or other prison-ready types. And who doesn't love a big head? So true. :o)

So you play, Holly? I played softball, but not baseball. Thank you for the congrats. Much appreciated.

  4. I don't play, but I've definitely become a fan! I love to turn on a baseball game while I'm writing.
